WJMS Academic Team takes part in showcase
The West Jessamine Middle School Academic Team took part in the seventh annual Kentucky Colonels’ Sixth Grade Academic Showcase competition Dec. 1 at Lexington Traditional Magnet School in Lexington, competing against seven other middle schools.
The Academic Showcase features written assessment events in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts and Arts/Humanities, and a double elimination Quick Recall Tournament. The event began in 1999 with 90 schools and has since more than doubled in size. Over 200 schools across Kentucky participated on Dec 1.
The coach of West Jessamine Middle School’s Academic Team is Ms. L. Gail Johnson, one of the school’s sixth grade Math teachers. West Middle placed first in the Quick Recall Competition and medaled in four written assessments to place second in the competition overall.
The Quick Recall team consisted of Noah Dixon, Wesley Holifield, Cale Canter, Nick Bernard, Jonathan Dean, Luke Davis, Mikayla Labrillazo, Allie Click, Stefan Stryker, David McElroy, Emily Tyndall, Bradley Phelps and Austin Vahle.
Students who placed in written assessments were Noah Dixon, 3rd in Science and 5th in Mathematics, Emily Tyndall, 4th in Language Arts, and Bradley Phelps, 6th in Science.
WJMS Principal Terry Meckstroth said, “I am so proud of the team and their great accomplishments.” The team is looking forward to the Governor’s Cup competition which will begin in late January.
